Thank you, Portugal, renewable energy works!

Running entirely on renewable energy for four days

According to GILE experts, the EU directives are important, but not the only success factor: a sustainable and consistent policy should be set and applied to match development trends and geopolitical environment of each economy; e well-established funding system should correspond to the market needs; a positive entrepreneurial dynamic should be witnessed within the Renewable Energy Industry of each country.

The new Renewable Energy Directive, adopted on 23 April 2009, sets the target of generating mandatory 20% of EU energy consumption from renewable energy sources by 2020. The EU also has longer strategic vision and targets of energy consumption, such as Energy Roadmap 2050, where decarbonisation scenarios indicates a renewable energy share of at least 30% by 2030.

In the case of Portugal directives are efficient and effective as before 2009 the country was considered one of Europe’s biggest producers of CO2 emissions (the target to reach 31 per cent share of renewable energy sources by 2020 is surpassed only by Austria, Latvia, Finland and Sweden).
